UMAMA LAND Wine
UMAMA LAND Pinotage tells a love story about the land where everything begins. In the Zulu language, umama means “mother”, and the name UMAMA LAND celebrates the land as a source of life, a place that shapes the character of everything that grows and lives there. UMAMA LAND is South Africa: strong, vibrant and wonderfully diverse.
We chose the antelope for the UMAMA LAND Pinotage label because its character has much in common with the wine itself. Strong yet graceful, energetic yet light in its movement, the antelope has a natural sense of freedom and independence. Pinotage shares that same spirit. It is bold and expressive, with rich fruit, vibrant energy and a character that is distinctly its own.
That connection feels even more natural because Pinotage was born in South Africa. The variety was created here in 1925, when Professor Abraham Perold crossed Pinot Noir with Cinsaut, then known locally as Hermitage.
From two European varieties came something entirely new. Over time, Pinotage developed its own identity and became one of the most distinctive symbols of South African wine.
Look closely at the antelope on the label and you will notice that its horns form a heart. It is a small but meaningful detail that brings us back to the idea at the heart of UMAMA LAND: a love for the land and the connection to a place that becomes home. A land that gives life, shapes character and always remains part of what is born there.
UMAMA LAND Pinotage is a wine shaped by the spirit of South Africa: its freedom, natural energy and independent character. A wine born from a deep connection to the land, carrying a sense of its origin in every bottle.
